With forecast models predicting temperatures around 0°F for Clay County and the surrounding tri-state area next week, it's essential to prepare for the frigid weather. Extreme cold can bring a host of challenges, but with proper planning, you can ensure your home, family, and pets stay safe and warm.

1. Prepare Your Home

  • Insulate Pipes: Frozen pipes can burst and cause costly damage. Wrap exposed pipes with insulation or heat tape, especially in unheated areas like basements or attics.

  • Seal Drafts: Use weatherstripping or caulking to seal cracks around doors and windows to keep warm air in and cold air out.

  • Check Your Heating System: Ensure your furnace or heating system is working efficiently. Replace filters and schedule maintenance if needed. If you rely on wood or pellet stoves, stock up on fuel.

  • Emergency Heat Source: If you lose power, a portable heater or fireplace can provide warmth, but make sure it's safe to use indoors. Never use outdoor grills or generators inside due to carbon monoxide risks.

2. Stock Up on Essentials

  • Food and Water: Have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food and bottled water for each family member.

  • Medicine: Refill prescriptions and keep a first-aid kit on hand.

  • Emergency Supplies: Flashlights, batteries, blankets, and a battery-powered radio are essential for staying safe during power outages.

3. Protect Your Car

  • Inspect Your Vehicle: Check the battery, antifreeze levels, tire pressure, and windshield wipers. Cold weather can weaken batteries and affect tire pressure.

  • Keep Your Gas Tank Full: A full tank helps prevent fuel lines from freezing and ensures you can stay warm if you’re stuck in your vehicle.

  • Emergency Kit: Keep a kit in your car with blankets, snacks, water, jumper cables, and a small shovel.

4. Dress for the Weather

  • Layer Up: Wear thermal underwear, sweaters, and waterproof outer layers to trap heat and block wind.

  • Protect Extremities: Wear insulated gloves, hats, scarves, and waterproof boots to prevent frostbite.

  • Avoid Cotton: Opt for wool or synthetic fabrics that retain heat even when wet.

5. Look Out for Pets and Livestock

  • Bring Pets Indoors: Pets should not be left outside during extreme cold. Provide a warm, dry shelter if they must remain outdoors.

  • Provide Extra Food and Water: Animals need extra calories in cold weather. Ensure water sources don’t freeze.

  • Check on Livestock: Ensure barns and shelters are well-insulated and stocked with bedding.

6. Be Ready for Power Outages

  • Backup Power: If you have a generator, ensure it’s in good working order and operates outside, away from windows.

  • Stay Warm Without Power: Block off one room and use blankets or sleeping bags to stay warm. Close off unused rooms to conserve heat.

  • Charge Electronics: Fully charge your phone and other devices before the storm hits.

7. Stay Informed

  • Monitor Weather Updates: Keep track of local weather reports for updates and warnings.

  • Follow Emergency Alerts: Sign up for local emergency notifications to stay informed about road conditions and potential shelters.

8. Check on Neighbors

  • Help Vulnerable Individuals: Reach out to elderly or disabled neighbors to ensure they have the supplies and resources they need.

By taking these steps now, you can minimize risks and discomfort during the upcoming cold snap. Stay warm, stay safe, and be prepared!
