Congratulations to Sacha De Corte of men's soccer and Shania Harris of women's soccer for earning Mountain Lion of the Week honors.
The Young Harris College men's soccer team is off to an incredible start to begin their 2024 season, as they sit at the top of the Conference Carolinas Southwest division; The Mountain Lions are 4-0-2 overall, 3-0 in conference play, and 2-0 in Southwest division matches.
This past week, the Mountain Lions men's soccer team had two matches scheduled, with Erskine College being the former and Barton College the latter. With hurricane weather approaching mid-week, the Erskine match was the only one played.
The match took place on Tuesday (Sept. 24) in Due West, South Carolina. The Mountain Lions dominated the Flying Fleet from start to finish. YHC took a 2-0 lead just 13 minutes into the match, with goals scored by Bjorn Jonasson and Filip Zander. With the first half winding down and Young Harris already in the driver's seat, Sacha De Corte put pedal to the medal to put YHC up three-nil.
The Mountain Lions would continue their dominance over Erskine College, taking down their Conference Carolinas opponent, 5-0. Defensemen Sacha De Corte netted his second goal of the season in the match and helped the Mountain Lions pitch the shutout in 69 minutes of playing time. Sacha's excellent play in the back end earned De Corte Mountain Lion of the week honors.
Shania Harris and the YHC women's soccer team also played in just one match against Erskine last Tuesday, as the hurricane weather led to the cancellation of Saturday's match against Barton College.
On Tuesday (Sept. 24), Shania Harris opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick just over 17 minutes into the match. Her relentless energy didn't stop there—Harris struck again in the 24th minute, beating a defender and slipping the ball past the Flying Fleet goalkeeper to give YHC a 2-0 advantage.
The Mountain Lions didn't let up, and by halftime, they held a 4-1 lead. Harris was far from finished, and early in the second half, she added her third goal, dribbling past multiple Erskine defenders before slotting the ball into the net for a hat trick.
Still hungry for more, Harris wasn't content with just three goals. A few minutes later, she received a well-placed pass from Vic Shanahan and maneuvered past several defenders before delivering a beautiful shot from the top of the box, securing the haul, her fourth goal of the day. The match was suspended early, with the Mountain Lions winning, 7-1, with just over 15 minutes remaining.
In just 47 minutes of play, Harris tallied four goals and an assist, making NCAA era Young Harris College history with the most goals (4) and points (9) in a single match for the women's soccer program.
Thanks to her remarkable performance, Harris earned Mountain Lion of the Week honors.
