Union County, GA – Ten individuals have earned their Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certifications following an intensive multi-day training course led by Lieutenant Patrick Schmidt of the Union County Fire Department.

The program, nationally recognized and approved by Safe Kids Worldwide, provided comprehensive instruction on car seat installation, child restraint systems, and public safety education.

The training brought together a diverse group of participants, including firefighters from the Union County Fire Department, deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy from Dawson County, and a firefighter from Hart County, highlighting a strong regional commitment to enhancing child passenger safety. The course culminated in a two-hour community car seat check event held at the Walmart parking lot, offering students a hands-on opportunity to apply their skills. During the free event, 12 vehicles were inspected, with technicians checking a total of 25 child safety seats. Of these, 11 seats were replaced on-site due to critical safety issues, such as expiration, prior crash involvement, or lack of proper labels from secondhand purchases.

Lt. Schmidt emphasized the importance of the practical component, stating, “This practical check-off event is essential for reinforcing what they’ve learned in the classroom. It also allows these technicians to make an immediate and meaningful impact in the communities they serve.”

All ten participants successfully passed both written and hands-on assessments, earning their CPST certifications. These new technicians are now equipped to assist with future community seat check events and provide guidance to parents and caregivers across the region. For those interested in having a child’s car seat inspected or installed, the Union County Fire Department offers free appointments.
