UNION COUNTY, GA – The Union County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about a new phone scam targeting residents, with scammers posing as representatives from United Community Bank. According to a social media post from the Sheriff’s Office, multiple reports have been received about fraudulent calls, including one from the phone number (770) 985-2337, though other numbers may also be used.
The scammers claim to be from United Community Bank and use various tactics to convince victims they are targets of fraud or scams, pressuring them to provide personal information. They may attempt to keep victims on the phone for extended periods and even threaten consequences if the call is disconnected. The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to hang up immediately if they receive such a call from an unknown individual and to verify the call by contacting the bank using a known, legitimate phone number. They emphasize that legitimate banks already have customers’ personal information and will not request it over the phone.
Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office reminds the public to avoid clicking on links in text messages unless the sender is verified and to never share security codes sent via text unless the recipient’s identity is confirmed. Residents with concerns or suspicions about potential scams are encouraged to contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 439-6066 for assistance.
The Sheriff’s Office urges vigilance to protect against these deceptive tactics.
