BLAIRSVILLE, GA – On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Union County Sheriff’s Office issued an urgent alert to residents following multiple reports of a new text message scam circulating in the area. The scam, which impersonates the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), falsely informs recipients that they have an outstanding traffic ticket requiring immediate payment.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the fraudulent message claims that failure to pay the alleged ticket will result in severe consequences, including suspension of the recipient’s license or registration, a report to the DMV, and potential prosecution. The scam concludes with a link prompting the recipient to pay the fine, a tactic designed to steal personal information or funds.
The Sheriff’s Office clarified that neither the Georgia DMV nor the Sheriff’s Office will ever contact individuals via text message to demand payment for citations. They strongly advise residents to be cautious of any unsolicited text messages or emails containing links, especially from unknown senders. “NEVER click on any links sent to you via text message or email unless you know the sender and you are expecting a link from them,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a social media post.
Residents who may have clicked on the scam link and fear their information has been compromised are encouraged to contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting the community and urges vigilance against such fraudulent schemes. For more information or to report suspicious activity, residents can reach out to the Union County Sheriff’s Office directly.
