“Kiss Me, Kate,” the spirited musical that blends the backstage chaos of a theatrical production with Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” is coming to life this July at Hayesville’s Peacock Performing Arts Center. A dedicated team of volunteers have been crafting costumes and scenery for the show, including three major two-sided sets — a logistical feat.

Lead set builder Sully Sullivan of Murphy said that, as a retired high-voltage lineman, he’s no stranger to thinking six steps ahead: “The director sketches a design and you have to build it in three days without detailed plans.”

The intricate sets are mounted on wheels, with entire scenes flipping on command. “Everything’s on casters,” said Steven Ethridge of Hayesville. “Laurel Adams, the director, had to run out and buy all the wheels she could find — and still didn’t have enough.”

Chris Kaphers of Hayesville said he’s never seen the theatre buy so much new material, but this set is more detailed than most.

Tony Walter of Martins Creek has worked on everything from lights to props since he started volunteering with the Peacock in 1994. “Now,” he said, “we’re building an 18-foot-long rolling flat with folding wings — the first of its kind here.”

Doug Rogers of Brasstown and Hein Vingerling of Warne are relative newcomers to set building, though Vingerling recently helped with the Peacock’s lobby renovation.

The set crew also includes Hayesvillians Randy Catts and Don Jones.

On the costuming side, Hayesville’s Dianne Spelts is tackling Shakespearean fashion for the first time. Landi Marrella of Hiawassee said this show is unique because each of the actors has two distinct characters to dress – keeping them separate is a challenge.

Beverly Braine and CW Sturgeon of Murphy are also contributing to the costume team.

“Kiss Me, Kate” runs July 18–20 and 25–27 at the Peacock, 301 Church St., Hayesville. Friday/Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. For detailed information call the box office at 828-389-2787 or visit us online at thepeacocknc.org. The Peacock is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and an equal opportunity provider and employer.
