Junior transfer Callum Waugh advanced a dozen positions in Monday’s second round at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate, taking over the team lead in a tie for 27th as Western Carolina men’s golf slipped into 10th with 18 holes to play. The final round opens Tuesday morning with tee times off both the first and 10th tees

Opening on the front nine, Waugh backed up his opening-round 1-over par 73 with a 1-under par 71 on Monday, countering three bogeys with four birdies and 11 pars. A pair of birdies against one bogey on the front nine left the Glasgow, Scotland, native to make the turn at 1-under par. Two birdies among his first four holes on the back nine left him at 2-under par with five holes to play. A bogey on the par-5 17th left him at 71 with a two-day total of even-par 144.
WCU’s other newcomer, freshman Chase Cline, moved up five spots on Monday with an even-par 72 to accompany his first-round 73 for a two-day total of 145. Cline birdied two of the final three holes of the front nine to counter a pair of bogeys to turn for home at even-par. After a pair of birdies and two bogeys between holes No. 10 and No. 13, Cline shot even par over the final four holes in recording his career-best round.
Rounding out the Catamount scoring five are sophomore Jace Butcher in a tie for 61st at 150 (75-76), junior Ivan Ninkovic tied for 67th at 151 (72-79), and sophomore Andrew Korytoski in a tie for 74th with a score of 153 (77-76).
Playing unattached as an individual, senior Kiefer Bulau has posted rounds of 73 and 74 for a total of 147, slipping six positions into a tie for 45th after two rounds.
First-round leader Santa Clara carries a two-stroke lead over hard-charging East Carolina entering Tuesday’s final 18 holes. The Pirates climbed four spots into a two-way tie for the runner-up position, matching Campbell with a two-round score of 565, two strokes back of Santa Clara at 563. Coastal Carolina slipped two spots into fourth at 567 with Elon rounding out the top five with a 36-hole score of 569.
Elon’s Jack Wieler who led after the opening 18 holes has company atop the leaderboard through two rounds. Dylan Teeter of Texas El-Paso moved up a pair of positions on Monday to match Wieler at 7-under par 137. The two carry a one-stroke advantage over a four-way tie for third place at 138.
