The Hayesville Yellow Jackets, eager to secure their first conference win, took on the Robbinsville Black Knights at Frank R. Long Memorial Stadium on Friday night. Both teams clashed in a hard-fought Smoky Mountain Conference game, but it was Robbinsville who emerged victorious, defeating Hayesville 28-6.
The game remained scoreless through much of the first half as both defenses made critical stops. But with just over five minutes remaining in the second quarter, momentum shifted. A Hayesville fumble on their own 23-yard line allowed Robbinsville to recover and capitalize just moments later. With 5:02 on the clock, Robbinsville connected on a 23-yard touchdown pass to break the deadlock, going up 7-0 after a successful extra point.
In the third quarter, Robbinsville extended their lead on a powerful 2-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 14-0. The Yellow Jackets responded quickly with a spark of their own as quarterback Tate Roberts connected with Ben Bethel on a 20-yard touchdown pass. However, Hayesville’s extra point attempt fell short, making it 14-6.
Robbinsville quickly dampened the Yellow Jackets’ momentum with another touchdown, this time on a 31-yard run, bringing the score to 21-6 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter.
The Black Knights sealed their victory early in the fourth quarter when they struck again on a 49-yard touchdown pass, ending any hopes of a Yellow Jacket comeback. Robbinsville’s successful extra point made the final score 28-6.
The Yellow Jackets now look to regroup as they prepare to take on the Andrews Wildcats on the road on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. to finish the regular season.
