Hayesville High School Celebrates Baseball Standouts Michael Mauney and Kyle Shaheen Signing Collegiate Commitments

Hayesville High School recently hosted a heartfelt signing ceremony to honor two exceptional baseball players, Michael Mauney and Kyle Shaheen, as they committed to play at the collegiate level. Mauney signed with Berea College in Kentucky, while Shaheen will join Bob Jones University in South Carolina. The event, held at the school, brought together friends, family, teammates, administrators, and local media to celebrate this milestone in the athletes’ careers.

Hayesville Athletic Director Michael Cottrell opened the ceremony, warmly welcoming attendees and expressing the deep pride felt by the school’s administration. He emphasized the significance of the occasion, highlighting the honor of supporting Mauney and Shaheen as they advance to the next chapter of their journeys.

Head baseball coach Joe Jack Sellers then spoke, reflecting on his long history with both players, whom he has coached since their youth. Michael Mauney, a versatile leader on the field, will take his talents to Berea College, a Division III program in Kentucky. Known for his competitive spirit and reliability, Mauney’s signing reflects his dedication to both baseball and academics. Following Hayesville's most recent game, Mauney had played in 21 games, posting a .373 batting average with 67 at-bats and 78 plate appearances. He scored 31 runs, recorded 25 hits, drove in 12 RBIs, and contributed two doubles and a triple. Additionally, Mauney showcased his speed, stealing 24 bases in 26 attempts.

Kyle Shaheen, a dynamic and clutch performer, will head to Bob Jones University in South Carolina. His skill and positive attitude have been vital to the Yellow Jackets’ success, positioning him for a strong collegiate career. As of signing day, Shaheen also appeared in 21 games with an impressive .447 batting average. Across 47 at-bats and 67 plate appearances, he scored 16 runs, tallied 21 hits, and drove in 18 RBIs, including four doubles. Shaheen was perfect on the basepaths, stealing 12 bases in 12 attempts.
