On Friday, December 6th, the Hayesville Lady Yellow Jacket varsity basketball team tipped off their season with a short trip to Hiawassee, Georgia, to face the Towns County Lady Indians. The match-up proved to be an intense, down-to-the-wire battle that ended in heartbreak for Hayesville.

The game started with both teams finding their rhythm, and at halftime, Hayesville held a narrow 23-22 lead. The Lady Jackets showcased a balanced offensive attack in the first half, with contributions from Ava Shook (8 points), Emma Ashe (6), Briley Clampitt (3), Mallory Peck (2), Brooke Graves (2), and Jasmine Brooks (2).

The second half continued the theme of back-and-forth action, as neither team managed to gain a decisive advantage. With less than 10 seconds remaining and the score tied, a scramble for a loose ball ended with a Towns County player securing possession and sinking a clutch go-ahead shot to put the Lady Indians up 43-42. Forced to foul with just 0.7 seconds left, Hayesville watched as Towns County added a free throw to seal the 44-42 victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Jackets in the full game was Ava Shook, who paced the team with 14 points. Briley Clampitt added 8, while Emma Ashe contributed 6. Jasmine Brooks scored 5 points, Mallory Peck chipped in 4, Bryleigh Krieger added 3, and Brooke Graves rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Despite the loss, Hayesville showed promise and resilience in their season opener. With strong performances from key players, the Lady Jackets will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they continue their pursuit of a successful season.
