Hayesville Track and Field Shines at 1A Western Regional, Qualifies for State Championships

The Hayesville High School track and field team delivered standout performances at the 1A Western Regional meet held on Friday, May 9, in Columbus, North Carolina, earning multiple qualifications for the upcoming NCHSAA State Championship meet. The Yellow Jackets showcased their depth and talent, with athletes securing podium finishes and a school record in a competitive field.
On the girls’ side, the 4x800 relay team of Savannah Burch, Sydney Greenstone, Raelynn Wood, and Ava Shook claimed fourth place, punching their ticket to the state meet with a gritty, well-coordinated effort. Their performance highlighted the team’s endurance and chemistry, setting the stage for a strong showing at the championship.

The boys’ team made waves with two relay qualifications. The 4x100 relay squad, consisting of Kenyon Rogers-Gibby, Elio Murillo, Jack Dorsey and Daniel Allen, secured fourth place, earning a state berth with their speed and precision. The same group elevated their performance in the 4x200 relay, taking third place and breaking a Hayesville school record in the process. Their record-setting run underscored the team’s explosive potential heading into the state meet.
In the field events, Hayesville’s throwers and jumpers also left their mark. Will Brown earned third place in the shot put, while EJ Mapasua took fourth, both qualifying for the state championships with powerful throws. Cooper Matheson rounded out the qualifiers, finishing fourth in the triple jump with a strong display of athleticism and technique.
The state championship meet awaits these Yellow Jacket standouts, who will look to build on their regional success and compete for top honors on the state stage. Hayesville’s track and field program continues to prove its mettle, with this group of athletes poised to make an impact.
