The Lady Yellow Jackets of Hayesville High School put up a strong fight but fell short against the Hiwassee Dam Lady Eagles in a hard-fought non-conference game on Tuesday night. The Lady Eagles came out on top with a 49-42 victory.
Hiwassee Dam controlled the game early, jumping out to a 17-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. Hayesville battled back to close the gap, but the Lady Eagles maintained a slim lead at halftime, 21-15. The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets, with Hiwassee Dam clinging to a 35-29 advantage heading into the final frame. Despite a valiant fourth-quarter effort, the Lady Yellow Jackets couldn’t overcome the deficit, and the Lady Eagles sealed the win.
Hayesville’s offensive effort was led by Ava Shook, who poured in 13 points. Emma Ashe added 10, while Briley Clampitt and Mallory Peck chipped in 6 points each. Peck, who provided a spark for the team, fouled out in the closing minutes, which hurt Hayesville’s chances for a late comeback.
Following the game, Lady Yellow Jackets head coach Chad McClure expressed his disappointment. "We just couldn't get shots to fall," McClure said. "When I look at our shooting chart, we had looks at the basket, just couldn't score."
The Lady Yellow Jackets are scheduled to host Chattanooga Christian on Friday, January 10. However, winter weather in the forecast could potentially alter those plans.
